The company

Located in the US, Naenka was founded in 2017 by sports and music lover Andrew Guo, the current CEO of Naenka He was looking to develop a gamechangers in the market of music and active lifestyle. It must be said each one of them look stylish, made with an eye for detail.

Because the quality of the sound is equally important than the wearing comfort, they also collaborate with Toronta-based musician William Arnaldo. Investing a significant part of their income in continuous research and development, they keep on improving and innovating. Reading their interesting vision and company philosophy… it all sounds, figuratively at the moment still, very promising. Let’s see if they can meet up to their promises with this Naenka Runner Pro review.

Unboxing the headphones

I removed the wrapping material and was looking at a smooth attractive black box. Very stylish…black with gold letters and on the back a high-quality picture of the headphones. You never have a second chance to make a very impression and I must say the box looks quite impressive. But it’s only a box of course.

I opened the box and there it was; a good looking black bone conduction headset. The Naenka Runner Pro comes with some accessoires. Namely a charging cable, a pair of ear buds and a manual. For those not being familiar with bone conduction heapdhones, the ear buds might sound a bit bizarre. You have to take into account though bone conduction is all about keeping the ears open and free. This means you will hear ambient sound. If that ambient sound is extremely loud (e.g; on construction sites) ear buds might help you to still hear your sound. Honestly, I have been using and reviewing bone conduction headphones for about 5 years and never used the ear buds.

The controls and charging

The control buttons are located on the right side of the headset. They are easy to use thanks to their size, easier than for example the Aeropex which I will talk about later on. The control panel consists of a power on/off – Mode key button and two volume + and – buttons. Looks good and feels good.

On the same side of the Bluetooth headphones sits a magnetic charge port. The charging cable easily sticks to the magnetic charge port and an indicator light starts flashing. When the headset is fully charged the light turns blue. Naenka promised a full charge in 2 hours and when I tested this it took indeed about 2 hours. One little downside is the fact the charging cable gets easily detached from the magnetic charge port. You must be very careful connecting it and then leave it untouched. A small touch might disconnect it. Forewarned is fore armed… so if you just keep this in mind, you should be okay charging it.

To take everything properly to the test, I also fully charged it and then let it play at medium volume until the headset said ‘bye bye, I am gone for the day!’. Naenka talks about 6 hours of playing time at 65% volume and my headset reached 6 hours and 10 minutes. Battery test… success!

The wearing comfort

We have used the Naenka Runner Pro for our review during two bike rides and two runs outside. The headset fitted nice under my bike helmet. It felt comfortable, even during my 200 km ride. My wife wore it during her 10 km and 20 km runs. She was very satisfied about the wearing comfort. Some bone conduction headphone frames jump up and down. Playing a tic-tac game with your collar…. But not the Naenka Runner Pro. So overall, a very comfy headset even for longer runs or rides!

The sound

If you buy some Bluetooth headphones, the sound is crucial. Why would you otherwise buy a headset. Some of us use it for running on the beats while others get inspired during their cycling rides by their favorite podcasts. No matter your preference… you want the sound to be clear, rich and dynamic. I have been testing it with both songs and podcasts and the sound is fairly well balanced. The sound profile is suitable for lots of audio content and there is even a nice bass range which can help you stay motivated even during your toughest workouts. Bone conduction headphones, no matter what brand, will never equal over ear ones but the Naenka Runner Pro gets pretty close to it.

Another big pro for the Runner Pro, what’s in a name, is the sound leakage. Which is often an issue with bone conduction headphones. The Naenka bone conduction headset gets a very high rating on this aspect from me. There is some leakage at the highest volume but it is very limited. Well done, Naenka!

Lastly, these wireless headphones feature a noise cancelling, noise reduction or noise isolation function. Whatever you want to call it. This feature blocks out background noises like noisy constructions sites, plane engines or chatter from the people around you. I have made a few calls and the noise cancelling works as expected.

Other Characteristics & Specifications

Naenka surprises us with a few other unique and fascinating features and functionalities which are worth mentioning in this review. The first one is the MP3 functionality. Indeed, the Pro Runner cannot only be used with Bluetooth but it also has an 8 GB internal storage. This means you can store 1500 of your favorite songs on the bone conduction device itself. Many of you will undoubtedly jump for joy when hearing about this MP3-feature. So far namely, there hasn’t been a bone conduction headset combining both Bluetooth and MP3 functionalities.

Another unique feature is the fact it is fully waterproof. It can therefore not only be used to cycle or run but also to swim. I would never state it is waterproof without testing it of course. Nevertheless, I must admit… I never get used submersing an electronic device. Electricity and water are like Romeo and Juliet… an impossible love. I submersed my bone conduction headphones for about 20 minutes and gave them another try afterwards. No difference in sound, no functionality issues,… all worked as smooth as… silky smooth water.

 AfterShokz Aeropex vs Naenka Pro Runner Review

This is a very interesting one; the AfterShokz vs Naenka Pro Runner review comparison. The Aeropex is namely the best bone conduction headphones on the market at the moment. And to make a long story short; can the Naenka Pro Runner compete with the AfterShokz Aeropex? Yes, I think it can.

The charging mechanism isn’t as stable as the one of the Aeropex and the weight is a bit higher. The Aeropex also feels a bit softer and has two hours more playing time. But on the other hand, the Naenka Pro Runner holds many winning cards the Aeropex can only dream about. It is for example fully waterproof and can therefore not only be used for running and cycling but also for swimming. If you would like to go the AfterShokz way; you need both the Aeropex and the Xtrainerz to achieve this.

Another big pro is the fact the Pro Runner has both Bluetooth and internal storage. I have been asked the following question many times by visitors of my blog: When will AfterShokz release Bluetooth + MP3 bone conduction headphones? Still one thing I wanted to add; the sound leakage. This has always been a big trump for the AfterShokz headphones compared to other brands like Vidonn and BoneTalker Adder. Naenka Customer Service

The Naenka website is a clear website with a user-friendly navigation. The customer service is reachable via phone and via mail. And based on my own experience, they are very responsive. Shipping is at the moment of writing free of charge and Naenka delivers a 12-month warranty and a 30-day return policy. The 12-month standard warranty can be extended with another 12 months if you register your product. I haven’t used their customer service yet for defects (luckily) but at first sight everything looks very professional and reliable.

The Naenka Pro Runner has happily surprised me. The past years I have tested various bone conduction headphones and this one seems to be the first AfterShokz competitor this name worthy. This is of course only a review based on a one-week use. I can’t tell you about the long-term performance, but I will do this in a few weeks’ and a few months’ time. The charging mechanism could be better, but Naenka has already told me they are working to enhance this. And as soon as the cable is properly connected it does charge. So it’s not matter of not working it’s just a design enhancement.

What I am particularly happy about with this bone conduction headset is the internal memory, the sound quality, the low price and the fact it can be used for cycling, running, walking and swimming. These are definitely Bluetooth bone conduction headphones you should consider.

Difference between the Aeropex Mini and the Aeropex

Head size…differs from one person to another. Although the Aeropex was intended to suit them all, some people still complained. AfterShokz did get some feedback of people the frame at the back was slightly too long. AfterShokz took away this feedback and developed a new shorter Aeropex. Without of course ignoring all the magnificent features and functionalities of the globally admired and loved Aeropex.

So 8 hours of battery life, a waterproof IP 67 construction (submersible for max 30 minutes up to one meter depth) and of course the premium pitch bone conduction 2.0+ technology which makes AfterShokz the best of the bone conduction class. The only difference is the size of the frame. The smaller Aeropex has a frame which is 0.5 inch (1,27 cm) smaller.

Which Aeropex do I need?

Now AfterShokz has released the smaller version of its top model the next logic question will probably be: which Aeropex do I need? Will the Aeropex Mini or the classic Aeropex fit me the best? The looks

Unpacking the AfterShokz OpenMove the first thing I notice is the fact the design goes back into the time. The Aeropex had and has a completely new design but the OpenMove goes back to the titanium days. That’s at least my personal opinion. Of course new technologies have been used but if you just take a look at the design. The ‘ears’ have little ribbons, and the titanium frame runs into the ‘ears’. It gives the OpenMove a kind of retro look which I honestly do like. It doesn’t look as aerodynamic and sporty as the Aeropex but I can imagine some people like this classy retro look more. There is no accounting for taste of course.

Color-wise AfterShokz could have done better at OpenMove level. The OpenMove is only available in alpine white and slate grey. For the ones familiar with AfterShokz headphones the slate grey color will probably ring a bell since both the Air and the Titanium had a slate grey version. The Alpine white color is a new one; looks good and fresh to my opinion.

The Aeropex on its turn has a broader range of colors to choose from. Besides cosmic black which is similar to the OpenMove slate grey one can also go for solar red, lunar grey and blue eclipse. Since appearance does matter, some people might be tempted to go for an Aeropex instead of choosing the OpenMove.

Wearing comfort

I tested both the Aeropex and the OpenMove during a 3 hours session on my bike while my wife tested both AfterShokz bone conduction headphones during a 2 hour run. There is little to no difference with regard to wearing comfort. The Aeropex has a so-called wrap-around titanium frame while the OpenMove has a partial titanium frame but we didn’t really feel the difference. Maybe if you go for these long endurance rides (6 hours and more), you would feel the difference. I will test it one of the coming days and will let you know. I do remember in an Air vs Aeropex test, the wearing comfort also became a factor during endurance trainings.

Features and functionalities

With regard to features and functionalities the big differences are the waterproof level of protection and the battery life. Especially the second aspect is crucial for me. The AfterShokz OpenMove has a battery life of 6 hours, while the Aeropex has a battery life of 8 hours. Since I often go on 6 hours+ rides the Aeropex suits me better. Many people though will not need those 8 hours so the 6 hours of OpenMove will do in that case. 8 hours are of course not only handy for long rides, runs or activities. The long battery life is also a blessing for those who tend to forget to recharge their devices on a frequent basis.

The Aeropex also has an IP67 waterproof level of protection vs IP55 for the OpenMove. I must say I have never experienced issues with my Air when wearing him in the rain or when sweating really hard. I compare it to the Air now because I have been using these headphones for about 2 years and they have the same IP55 waterproof level of protection.  An IP55 therefore does the job perfectly.

Except for the weight: 26 grams for the Aeropex vs 29 gramsfor the OpenMove, the other features and functionalities are the same. Both headphones for example have Bluetooth 5.0.

Price AfterShokz OpenMove vs Aeropex

The AfterShokz Aeropex is the top of the bill high-end bone conduction headphones model of AfterShokz. It comes at a price of $159,95. The AfterShokz OpenMove is the step-in model which comes at a price of $99,95.

AfterShokz Aeropex vs OpenMove Conclusion

Personally, I am still a bigger fan of the AfterShokz Aeropex but the OpenMove hasn’t been designed to replace the Aeropex. I see it as an enhanced but cheaper version of the Aeropex Air. This version is ideal for people who want to discover the bone conduction technology via a very decent product. The fact the OpenMove uses the same sound quality technology as the Aeropex is a big pro to go for these bone conduction headphones if in doubt between the Air and the OpenMove.

The reason I like the Aeropex more is the fact I regularly make long endurance rides and I like the looks more. But as stated before, the looks or the design that’s a matter of personal taste. My main reason is the battery life. In case 6 hours of battery life is sufficient for you, I would really consider buying the AfterShokz OpenMove. But who and what is SND-Ray and can the team behind this brand be trusted? Well, as far as we can go and know… it looks like this brand can be trusted. The company behind, SND-Ray Labs Inc., is a registered company located in Cheyenne of which all details can be found on the Internet. A big pro we believe because we have seen others in the past on Indiegogo and Kickstarter.

The story behind the design and development of SND-Ray goes back to a mountain walk. A nice story with an adventurous touch which immediately grabs your attention. Telling your story you will create trust with your audience, but of course there is no trust without consistency and a product which triggers your senses. Wait and see…

Sunglasses with that extra touch

The SND-Ray sunglasses are not your regular type of sunglasses. Yes, they have polarized lenses and yes they have UV-blocking characteristics and yes they even have the famous and popular Rayban Wayfarer design… but that’s where the similarities stop and the differences start. These sunglasses are so much more. The SND-Ray is equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity to ensure a smooth connectivity with other Bluetooth devices like your smartphone. They have an integrated microphone and 4 bone conduction speakers (read transducers allowing you to not only listen to music but also to pick up calls and to talk to the person on the other side of the line.  The 4 bone conduction speakers will create a so-called “authentic and outstanding 360° sound”!

Next in the line of specifications is their water resistance. SND-Ray Labs Inc. claims their product will have an IP55 water resistance. IP55 means it is protected against dust ingress that could be harmful for the normal operation of the product but is not fully dust tight. It is protected against solid objects and water jets projected by a nozzle. So, all in all sweat and rain will have no influence on the functionality of your glasses but don’t use them in a shower or for swimming.

We are also happy to ready a single charge of 30 minutes allows you to listen up to 6 hours to music. A big improvement compared to other bone conduction sunglasses and even the classic bone conduction headphones. The device is charged via a standard Mini-USB port. One day we hope bone conduction newbees or even classic brands will introduce wireless charging though.

One other major differences with other glasses is the chance to order prescription lenses. A nice extra for sure!

So all in all, the specifications and characteristics sound very nice theoretically and we hope they will also sound nice in practice!

SND Ray vs Zungle Viper

As stated before, in September 2018 we have also reviewed the Zungle Viper and the Zungle Panther. Although we still like the looks of these glasses and gave them an overall good rating for their sound, we did determine a few areas of improvement. Moreover, the past year we have received a few messages of people who had encountered issues when trying to contact Zungle for after sale support. With regard to the areas of improvement we would have liked a more dynamic sound and less sound leakage at higher volumes. These were the two most important remarks. Looking at the characteristics of the SND-Ray these ‘obstacles’ to buy a Zungle might have been tackled. The SND-Ray bone conduction sunglasses promise a more dynamic and 360° sound experience thanks to 4 built-in bone conduction transducers while Zungle Viper only had two of these vibration speakers. Besides the manufacturers also promise no sound leakage… Especially regarding this aspect we are curious. We have some good experiences with headphones like the AfterShokz Aeropex and the AfterShokz Trekz Air so fingers crossed the SND-Ray will be the first bone conduction sunglasses to reach the same level of sound leakage quality.

If we look at the SND-Ray vs Zungle Viper aspect we also notice several other enhancements and specifications which the Zungle doesn’t have. First of all, they are lighter. Secondly, they are IP55 water resistant and have a playback up to 6 hours (vs 4 hours for the Zungle). Finally, the SND-Ray has polarized, scratch-resistant lenses (the Zungle has standard UV-blocking lenses).

Based on their story, the design and looks and the characteristics, we are really looking forward to take these glasses to the test. At first sight the device might look too futuristic, funny and even bizarre… but think again. We do see a future for the BassMe. Duroy philosophy: less volume, more sound sensation

One of the main arguments and reasons for developing the BassMe is the protection of your ears. Studio Duroy feels very strongly about our hearing capacity. We fully agree with the fact that when we are playing a game or when we are watching a movie using headphones, to increase the sensations and to magnify the sound experience and the overall experience, we tend to increase the volume. AfterShokz is known for producing some of the best wireless headphones in the world. So-called bone conduction headphones which give you an open-ear experience combined with an excellent sound. On CES 2020 we noticed their latest addition to the bone conduction fleet: the Aeropex.

What we also noticed though, and which took us by surprise, was an Aeropex Mini. Yes indeed, a mini. Just like we had an AfterShokz Trekz Titanium and an AfterShokz Trekz Titanium mini a few years ago. Although so far, for us, the frame of the Aeropex never felt to be annoying or too long, AfterShokz wants to please some of their customers looking for a smaller and shorter frame. The Aeropex Mini will suit their needs and requirements. No head size is equal so the Aeropex Mini might prove useful. Besides, the interesting thing about the Trekz Titanium Mini was the fact it offered a perfect fit for children. So maybe they are also aiming for this group tp become AfterShokz aficionados!

Small heads or children

The AfterShokz Aeropex Mini features a 9.5 mm shorter frame for a more snug fit for people having a smaller head or children. This way AfterShokz clearly accommodates a wider range of head size. I tried them on and I must say they felt like a part of my body. They sat perfectly and jumping up and down they barely moved around.

Aeropex Mini Launch Date and Price

I did ask some questions to the people at the AfterShokz stand but unfortunately a launch date and a price were not yet known. I can’t imagine though we will have to wait for months for this Aeropex Mini to be launched. I would say at most a month or two and regarding the price… expect a similar price as the one you pay for the AfterShokz Aeropex. So $149 or €169.

What they could confirm to me is that the Aeropex Mini uses the exact same bone conduction technology as the Aeropex. The only difference is the length of the frame hanging behind your head.

Aeropex Assist at your service

One new AfterShokz headphones would already be a surprise but AfterShokz made the surprise even bigger at CES 2020 with a second add-on: the Aeropex Assist. The Aeropex Assist is equipped with an extra button to summon Google Assistant. No other difference whatsoever between the current Aeropex and the Aeropex Assist. Google Assistan can be summoned by an additional button which is installed on the right transducer / ear of the headphones. This button looks similar to the call button on the left transducer. By pushing the button Google Assistant will be activated via an app on your Android or iOs phone. It will allow you to instruct Google Assistant via your voice. It shows the close partnership between Google and AfterShokz and we might expect further cooperation between the two giants. There was even a Google representative available at the AfterShokz stand to show the new Google Assistant n the Aeropex Assist. Do we need to say more?
